Legacy Plow and Trailer -Member Meeting

Lewis from Legacy Plow and Trailer in Elizabeth will be our guest speaker for the April Membership meeting. Legacy is a great business to have in your call list when mechanical, emergency and maintenance issues arise with your trailer or mowing/plowing equipment. Lewis and Rob have been in the repair business for many years and Lewis will be talking about their yearly maintenance checks, their trailer tune-ups and offering expertise in what we should be looking for to get our trailers ready for riding and clearing season.

BARR LAKE STATE PARK BREAKFAST RIDE

TRAIL BOSS for this ride is Savanna Barnett 972-533-7210

$10 Daily Pass or CO. Parks Pass. FRBCH members are welcome to invite guests! Park by the Nature Center/round pen/playground. We are riding out and back approximately 6.8 total miles, turning back before reaching the railroad tracks. The tracks or a train may be visible but far enough away for horses to process. The trail is wide, mostly flat with packed dirt and loose gravel. Expect strollers, hikers and bikes. There are 2 bridge crossings, one at the Nature Center that is long and arched and one further into the ride that can be avoided by staying on the road. Please consider whether this ride is a good fit for your horse.

10:00am Breakfast/Brief Presentation about FRBCH and first aid essentials. Trail Boss Savanna will be in contact regarding breakfast details. Ready to ride 11:00am.

Huerfano SWA Picnic Table Project

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) was funded to replace the wood planks on all 14 picnic tables at Huerfano State Wildlife Area (HSWA). ‍ ‍CPW will manage the entire project and provide all materials needed to complete the project but they NEED VOLUNTEERS to help with the work. There are 6 volunteers from the Lavita hiking club and at least 3 managers from CWP. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FROM FRBCH!. Sign Up below:

Work is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12 to begin at 9:00am at the main campground at HSWA. Lunch will be provided by CPW. If you have battery powered drill or saws, please bring them. Contact Jerry with questions 303-921-8138.

Saddle UP Colorado - Saddle Fitting/Member Meeting

We are having a special membership meeting on Saturday, June 6, at Saddle Up Colorado’s location in Gilcrest, Colorado. Danna Golden, Owner of Saddle Up Colorado, will be doing a free saddle fitting, a $100 value, for 2 lucky FRBCH members whose names are drawn from the sign-up list. The rest of us will have the opportunity to learn from Danna and perhaps win some gift certificates to use for purchases of merchandize or toward future saddle fittings from the Saddle Up store. If you win a saddle fitting, you will be contacted by FRBCH Board and receive information about bringing your horse and saddle to the meeting in Gilcrest. Everyone, bring your questions and get ready to learn a wealth of information about how saddle fitting affects your horse’s performance and comfort. Dr. Marc McCall, DVM - Member Meeting

Dr. Marc McCall has been the owner of Cherry Creek Equine since 1985 and is limited to the care and treatment of horses. Dr. McCall has special interest in equine lameness, surgery, medicine and dentistry. He also competes as an amateur in Calf Roping and Breakaway Roping. He will be sharing his insights developed over many years about the problems we, as horse owners, face with overweight horses, does alfalfa really make your horse “hot” and is it a good solution to grass hay, and some guidance he provides to his clients.

ENTER THE PARK FROM MORRISON ROAD, TAKE 1ST RIGHT, FOLLOW THE ROAD PAST THE LAKE AND STABLES. TURN LEFT AT THE STABLES. YOU’LL SEE THE HORSE ARENA AND TRAILER PARKING ON THE LEFT. THE MOUNT CARBON LOOP TRAIL IS 6.7 MILES. FOOTING INCLUDES SAND, GRAVEL, SINGLE TRACK AND SHORT CEMENT SECTIONS. EXPECT DOGS, HIKERS, BIKES AND GOLFERS. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF CREEK CROSSINGS. 4:00 PM BRIEF PRESENTATION ABOUT FRBCH. READY TO RIDE 5:00 PM. MOCKTAILS AND SNACKS TO SHARE FOLLOWING THE RIDE. 17 Hands Equine Nutrition - Member Meeting

Connie Flores, owner of 17 Hands Equine Nutrition, began studying equine nutrition out of a desire to provide the best life possible for her horse. She became a certified equine nutrition advisor so she could use her experience to help others save time and money by offering an optimized feeding program for their horses. Connie provides nutritional consultations with a whole horse approach as well as hay testing and analysis. She will be speaking on metabolic equines, forage choices, ulcer prevention and electrolytes to support overall horse health.

2026 FRBCH Christmas Tree Ambassador Program

Each year Front Range Back Country Horsemen travel with our horses to the Buffalo Creek forest to visit families that go to pick out the perfect Christmas Tree for their homes. We dress ourselves and our horses in Christmas attire, and ride through the area speading Christmas greetings and handing out candy canes to the kids. Families are so excited to see us and the kids love to get to pet the horses. It is a fun time for everyone. Details will be forthcoming on the 2026 Christmas Tree Ride soon. Two weekends Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 27-29 and December 5 and 6.

Ready to Ride Out 9:30am. Trail is easy to moderate. 1st 2 miles is CT Seg4 links to the south end of Payne Creek trail. Mostly easy to navigate with stretches of gravel and rock, some narrow trail stretches with granite rock/boulders. Approx 8200 ft altitude rising to about 9800 ft. First 3.5 trail miles are clear. Estimated 8 mile round trip total.

Shoes/boots recommended. Bring lunch and plenty of water for yourself. Not advised for beginner horses or riders, need to be trail aware and self-sufficient. Each rider will carry a saw to use - no chainsaws.

Directions: SW on US285 to Bailey. Turn left at bottom of Crow Hill, CR68 past several businesses then turns to a gravel road. At each intersection bear right, remain on CR68 follow signs toward Wellington Lake and The Outdoor Lab. Rolling Creek TH signage indicates Colorado Trail crossing. Small parking lot on the right, park near entrance. Room for 4-5 rigs. Do NOT proceed up the road-no place to turn around. If no room in lot, proceed to The Outdoor Lab to turn around and come back to park on the road.

Part of Lost Creek Wilderness - Room in Parking Area for 5 rigs.‍ ‍Moderate trail, easy to navigate, dirt packed with some rocky stretches, wide, gradual climb. Some narrow trail with side drop offs, switchbacks and water crossings. Trail Head appoximately 7800 ft. altitude.

Shoes or boots recommended to prevent chipped hooves. Bring lunch & plenty of water for yourself. Not advised for beginner horses or riders - need to be trail aware and self-sufficient. Each rider will also carry a saw to use on the trail - no chainsaws.

Directions: SW onUS285 to Bailey. Turn left at Conoco station, cross creek left on CR64. SW until you see a church on left where road divides. Continue straight up the hill onto the gravel road. Proceed appoximately 2 miles to a National Forest trailhead on left side of road. Go past the trailhead about 150 years, turn right onto dirt road and find a parking spot in the meadow or adjoining dirt roads.
